Find chords by listening a song

Find chords by listening a song

1) Try to recognize the sound of chords itself.

Min - Sad
Maj - Happy
Sus4 - sound suspended and need to be resolve
maj7 - sound dreamy
Sus2, 2, add9 - All sound very similar and gentle sound (Btw, it is not suitable to use these kind of chords in strong high energy praise song)
7 - sound exciting

2) It is sometimes difficult to distinct between some major chords and its corresponding minor 7th.

For eg. (for C key)
- G and Em7
- F and Dm7 etc...
In this case, listen if it is a minor or major sound.
[Minor - sound sad]
[Major - sound happy]

3) Bass line sometimes goes in order of the scale, either ascending or descending

For eg. (for C key)
- C G/B Am
- F C/E Dm etc...
(notice the descending bass line)
[Listening to the bass line can sometimes be easier than the whole chords.]
I usually listen to the main chords the first time, then the bassline the second time.


4) Try to familiarize yourself with those common chords progression and how it sound.

For eg. (for C key)
- C Am F G
- C G Am F
- C G/B Am
- Dm7 G C (common for ending)
- F G Em Am
- Em Am F G

5) Practice

The best way to get the correct chords is to keep practicing. Take 1 song and try to listen and find the chords yourself, then compared with a version that you know is correct. Check what you did right, and what you did wrong.

Guitar Tuning

Set 1:
the 6th string in open position (E note) to the 5th string open position (A note);
the 5th string in open position (A note) to the 4th string open position (D note);
the 4th string in open position (D note) to the 3rd string open position (G note);
the 3rd string in open position (G note) to the 2nd string open position (B note); and finally,
the 2nd string in open position (B note) to the 1st string open position (E note);

Set 2: (optional)
the 1st string in open position to the 5th fret of the 2nd string - E notes;
the 2nd string in open position to the 4th fret of the 3rd string - B notes;
the 3rd string in open position to the 5th fret of the 4th string - G notes;
the 4th string in open position to the 5th fret of the 5th string - D notes; and finally,
the 5th string in open position to the 5th fret of the 6th string - A notes.

Set 3: (optional)
the 1st string in 7th fret to the 2nd string in open position - E notes;
the 2nd string in 8th fret to the 3rd string in open position - B notes;
the 3rd string in 7th fret to the 4th string in open position - G notes;
the 4th string in 7th fret to the 5th string in open position - D notes; and finally,
the 5th string in 7th fret to the 6th string in open position - A notes.

Set 4: (optional)
Start with - 2nd string open with 1st string 7th fret.
6th string open with 1st string open - E notes;
5th string 2nd fret with 2nd string open - B notes;
4th string 2nd fret with 1st string open - E notes;
3rd string open with 1st string 3rd fret - G notes;

Finally,
Play a few chords to test out your tuning.

Playing Basic Chords

The C Chord Form

Here is the 1st position and the movable form. It may take a little practice to get the movable chord form sounding clear. Start up the neck and work your way down making sure all notes ring out clear.

The A Chord Form

The G Chord Form

This chord requires a long stretch, you should practice this one up the neck where the frets are closer together.

The E Chord Form

This is the most used major chord form. It contains 3 root notes, two 5th's and one 3rd on the 3rd string.

The D Chord Form

This chord has a good stretch to it. This is another chord you should start to practice up the neck 1st and work your way down one fret at a time.

The C minor Chord Form

This basic minor chord will be harder to finger for beginners so start up the neck and get used to it and then work your way down the neck. This one gives the muscles between the ring and little finger a stretching workout.

The A Minor Chord Form

This is a popular form and a little easier to play.

The G Minor Chord Form

This basic chord form is very hard to finger and doesn't get used as an everyday chord but is good know for lead work. Start this up the neck as far as you can reach on your guitar. This is a muscle builder but don't over do it, a little each day is best.

The E Minor Chord Form

This is the easiest of the basic guitar chords barre chords to play. This is the E major form with the 3rd lowered one fret.

The D Minor Chord Form

This is a good 1st position chord
